World Trade Center (WTC) was located in Lower Manhattan in New York City. The original WTC was designed by Minoru Yamasaki in the early 1960's using a tube-frame structural design for the twin 110-story towers. WTC was the tallest building in the world from 1972 to 1974. Unluckily, WTC was destroyed in 2001 in the September 11 attacks.
On Tuesday September 11, 2oo1, terrorists hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 anf deliberately crashed it into the northern facade of the north tower at 8:46 a.m. 17 minutes later, a second team of terrorists crashed the similarly hijacked United Airlines Flight 175 into the south tower. The damage caused to the North Tower by Flight 11 destroyed any means of escape from above the impact zone, trapping 1,344 people while as many as 600 people were killed instantly or were trapped at or above the floors of impact in the South Tower.
